An appeal is a course of action taken to request an official change to court decision. In very broad terms, there are de novo appeals and appeals on the record.

 

With de novo appeals, a case is reheard by a new decision maker devoid of any reference to the decision maker previously on the case. With an appeals on the record, the previously assigned decision maker’s decision is challenged. The challenge is usually argued by stating a factual finding was incorrect, a law was misapplied, the decision maker acted in outside of their jurisdiction, had bias, their powers were abused, evidence was considered which should not been considered, or did not consider evidence which should have been considered.
